  1. In computing, an input device resembling an
  2. ordinary pen, used to indicate locations on a
  3. computer screen. With certain computer-aided
  4. design (CAD) programs, the light pen can be
  5. used to instruct the computer to change the
  6. shape, size, position, and colours of
  7. sections of a screen image. At its tip, the
  8. pen has a photoreceptor which emits signals
  9. as light from the screen passes beneath it.
  10. From the timing of this signal and a gridlike
  11. representation of the screen in the
  12. computer's memory, a computer program can
  13. calculate the position of the light pen.
